The Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) was founded in 1911 in the city of Lisbon, Portugal, with the aim of providing top quality education and fostering research in the areas of engineering, science and technology. In 1930 the IST became an autonomous institute within the Technical University of Lisbon. IST is a research oriented school settled in two campuses, one in central Lisbon and another one in Taguspark, a modern science and technology complex located on the coast southwest of Lisbon that is home to more than 130 high-tech companies. IST hosts about 8500 undergraduate (BSc and MSc), 1500 postgraduate students (of which 700 PhD students) and a faculty of nearly 800 professors. Students can choose from the wide variety of MSc and PhD programs offered at IST, covering classical engineering and basic science fields as well as a number of the emerging scientific areas. A significant number of international students participate in IST’s Master and Doctoral programs.
